US REACTION TO BIDEN WITHDRAWAL

Afghans desperate to escape Taliban rule have been trying to board evacuation flights out of the country, and videos of the chaotic scenes have been seen across the world. Joe Biden now insists this was always the plan, but how will the public see his withdrawal? Katy speaks to Freddy Gray and Ipsos MORI CEO Ben Page.

WHY DID THE AFGHAN GOVERNMENT COLLAPSE?

But how did it all go wrong in the first place? Why did the Afghan government fall so easily to the Taliban? Katy is join by the freelance journalist Shelly Kittleson, who reported from Afghanistan for a month during the collapse.

WHAT IS KABUL LIKE?

What about Kabul today? The Taliban is known for its historically awful treatment of women and minorities. Will this change? Professor Faiz Zaland from Kabul University is on the show. He’s in Kabul, where the internet isn’t so great, so called in to speak to us.

CHINA'S COVID WOES

China - officially at least - is reporting just 2,000 cases a day, but state media says it’s the most serious wave of the pandemic so far. In this week’s magazine, Cindy writes that the country’s zero Covid approach can’t last. She joins the show.

WHAT DOES POVERTY MEAN?

Now back home, what does poverty mean? In this week’s magazine, Leo McKinstry writes that it has been co-opted by big brands. He joins the show with Grace Blakeley.

WHY MOVE TO LONDON?

Would you give up 80 per cent of the space in your house? Martin Vander Weyer, The Spectator’s business editor, did, when he moved from Yorkshire to London. What was he thinking, and does he think he made the right move? He's on the show.
